Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support farm management in Denmark
A recent case study illustrates how thanks to Sentinel-2 data, farmers can be provided with a decision support service which improves the management of farms covering 100ha and above.
The service, which is based on the processing of Sentinel 2 images every 5 days, calculates vegetation indices and determines where crops are under stress.
These early warnings of threats help farmers deciding if specific actions are needed, such as reducing the quantity of chemicals to be spread.
The study shows that the use of such a service leads to direct, economic benefits to the farmers. It also indicates that the extension of the service to the whole of Europe might lead to total benefits to cereal farmers in the range of €2.7b per annum.
Background: The above-mentioned case study is the 4th one carried out by European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) and the first in a series in the frame of the study “Assessing the detailed benefits derived from Copernicus Earth Observation (EO) data within selected value chains”, under an assignment from the European Space Agency (ESA), funded through the EU Copernicus programme.
