Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Activated for Forest Fire in Sweden
Warm and dry Spring weather has resulted in a high fire risk for parts of Sweden. Local media report some areas have not seen rain since 11 May.
As a result, vegetation has become dry and easily flammable. Alarms in the Västmanland area sounded on 4 June, warning that a forest fire had started. Helicopter water bombers, staff of emergency services and armed forces, as well as volunteers have been mobilised to extinguish fires in at least three different areas, but winds and dry vegetation were making them difficult to control. Twenty-five people have been evacuated as a precaution while no injuries have been reported.
On 6 June, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) activated the EMS to produce delineation maps, showing the extent of the damage, and grading maps, showing its magnitude, over 3 Areas of Interest (AoIs). The delineation maps delivered show that a total of 106.4 hectares have been affected by the fires within the AoIs.
The maps delivered are available on the EMS website: Activation EMSR290.
