Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Activated for Floods in North Eastern Greece
On 25 June, a storm nicknamed “Storm Nefeli” made its way over central and North Eastern Greece. Extreme amounts of rainfall from the storm resulted in floods that began on 28 June. Local media reports recordings of up to 150 mm of rain over 24 hours and at least 858 calls for emergency assistance.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection in Greece has declared a state of emergency in all the affected areas.
On 29 June, the Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection activated the EMS Rapid Mapping Component to produce a delineation map, showing the extent of the flooding, and a grading map, showing its magnitude.
The delineation map, produced on 29 June, shows nearly 1700 ha have been affected by flooding. The grading map, produced one day later, shows nearly 1900 affected. The maps delivered are available on the EMS website: Activation EMSR292.
