Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Activated for Floods in Romania
On 30 June, large amounts of rainfall caused flooding in central and Eastern Romania. Rivers across the country are at risk of flooding and many houses have already been damaged.
The Romanian National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management has issued a code Red for Harghita, Covasna, Neamt, and Bacau counties, meaning homes and businesses may flood along with the nearby river.
Local media reports over 500 people have been evacuated or have left their homes, while thousands are without electricity.
On 30 June, the Romanian government activated the EMS Rapid Mapping Component to produce three reference maps, showing the features at risk of damage, and three delineation maps, showing the extent of the flooding, over three Areas of Interest (AoIs). The maps delivered are available on the EMS website: Activation EMSR293.
