Surface currents forecast in support to safer maritime traffic in the Gulf of Trieste
The project aims to support maritime policy implementation, Blue growth, and scientific innovation in the northern Adriatic region with the service offering two-day hourly forecasts of surface current velocity in the Gulf of Trieste. This aids ship operators in planning efficient routes, reducing fuel consumption, enhancing safety, and controlling oil spills. The National Institute of Biology provides daily updates and graphical forecasts on its website for free access. The service is crucial for entities like the Slovenian Maritime Administration and the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief. Developed in collaboration with the Slovenian Environment Agency, this case study serves as a foundational element for sustainable marine policy implementation and a potential pilot project for continuous coastal sea monitoring.
This Use Case was funded by the Copernicus Marine Service User Engagement Programme 2022-2028.
