Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Activated for Forest Fires in NW Spain

On 12 May, a forest fire broke out in north-west Spain, in the Santa Colomba de Curueño area of the Castilla y Léon autonomous region. The fire continued into the following day, covering a significant area that has recognised ecological value.

The Spanish Civil Protection activated the Copernicus EMS on a low priority service level to produce a delineation map, showing the extent of the damage, and a grading map, showing its magnitude, over the affected Area of Interest (AoI).

The maps of the Santa Colomba AoI show that 463 hectares have been affected by the fire.

Cloudy weather considerably delayed the availability of usable satellite imagery but the maps are now available on the EMS website: Activation EMSR288.
