Marine Pollution Monitoring USE CASE Routine monitoring off the coast of Greenland

The Joint Arctic Command (JACO) of the Danish Defence Command, in collaboration with the Comprehensive Maritime Surveillance (CMS) system and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), monitors the seas around Greenland to detect pollution. Since January 2018, CMS has been providing pollution detection services, capturing images to identify illegal discharges from ships. Trained operators analyse these images and supporting data to pinpoint potential pollution and assess the likelihood of oil presence on the sea surface. If a possible oil spill is detected, an alert message is sent to the Danish authorities, and the analysed images are made available on the user portal in near-real-time. These capabilities enable swift responses and increase the chances of catching polluters, leading to their prosecution.
