Maritime Security Overview
Maritime safety and security operations, including accident prevention, search and rescue, vessel traffic routing, and port security, are supported by the Comprehensive Maritime Surveillance (CMS) service. CMS helps ensure the safe transit of vessels, people, and goods in European waters and on European flagged vessels globally. Satellites are used to track floating objects like icebergs or lost containers that can pose threats to vessels, enabling authorities to issue timely warnings. In remote or harsh weather conditions, satellite images are often the primary monitoring option. Additionally, CMS uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite images to locate and identify vessels that have lost contact and are suspected to be adrift.
