Since spring, several wildfires in central Russia and Siberia have sent huge quantities of smoke into the atmosphere, which travelled several thousands of kilometres across the Arctic Ocean to Alaska and North-West Canada and eventually the west coast of Greenland.

Warm and dry weather has been causing quick-moving forest fires across Sweden this summer. Sweden’s national website for emergency information has reported, on several occasions, forest fire risks and dangerously high temperatures.
Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping activated to monitor an iceberg in Greenland

In early July, an 11-million ton iceberg drifted close to the western coast of Greenland, nearing a settlement known as Innaarsuit. Pieces of the iceberg have already broken off, sending waves towards the town. Authorities fear that a larger splitting of ice could cause a tsunami.

On 25 June, a storm nicknamed “Storm Nefeli” made its way over central and North Eastern Greece. Extreme amounts of rainfall from the storm resulted in floods that began on 28 June. Local media reports recordings of up to 150 mm of rain over 24 hours and at least 858 calls for emergency assistance.

On 30 June, large amounts of rainfall caused flooding in central and Eastern Romania. Rivers across the country are at risk of flooding and many houses have already been damaged.

On 26 and 27 June, the Greek cities of Mandra and Magoula experienced heavy amounts of rainfall, which was followed by flash flooding.
Mandra, which is just West of Athens, experienced similar flooding in November 2017, which claimed 24 lives. There has been no loss of life due to the recent flooding.

Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Activated for Wildfire in England

On Sunday, 24 June, a fire began in Saddleworth Moor, East of Manchester, England. The fire faded over the evening, but re-ignited on Monday. Due to the dry landscape, winds have carried the fire approximately 6 km from its starting point.

On 12 May, a forest fire broke out in north-west Spain, in the Santa Colomba de Curueño area of the Castilla y Léon autonomous region. The fire continued into the following day, covering a significant area that has recognised ecological value.
