Urban Planning
With more than a quarter of the European Union territory directly covered by urban land use, the management of urban areas is a key component of any sustainable development policy.
European local and regional authorities have significant responsibilities in the field of urban planning. In particular, they are responsible for the successful implementation at local and regional levels of EU policies influencing spatial planning.
However, Europe’s municipalities and regions face diverse planning challenges (e.g. waste management, exploitation of renewables energies), which can have a major impact on citizens' quality of life.
Copernicus can help them face these challenges by providing information on land use and land cover classification, urban growth, urban green areas, urban heat islands, imperviousness, etc.
Copernicus can also help monitor the stability of infrastructures, assess new construction sites, assess population density etc.
